The college’s 13th season of its 3D Journeys lectures and optional travel series will center around the sights and sounds of Tuscany, Italy, a region known for its scenic landscapes, historic landmarks and beautiful vineyards.
“The lectures will be on the fourth Monday, January through March 2023, at 10 a.m., in Callaway Auditorium,” said Lauranne Buchanan, who co-chairs the 3D Journeys series with Ann Beason. “Our lecturers this year are three LC favorites: Dr. Joe Cafaro, retired History Professor; John Lawrence, retired Art Professor; and Dr. Nina Dulin-Mallory, retired English Professor.”
Dr. Cafaro, who has been to several countries with students, faculty and community members, said international travel is an unparalleled immersive learning experience.
“Experiencing the people, culture, and history of another land is absolutely exhilarating,” he said.
Lawrence, who has traveled to Italy twice with Dr. Dulin-Mallory, said he enjoys exploring the art scene in Tuscany.
“Art makes up the identity of Tuscany, known as the birthplace of the Renaissance,” he said. “The picturesque views of Tuscany have served as a canvas for artists throughout history.”
Dr. Dulin-Mallory, who has journeyed to several countries, said she treasures the memories she has made on her international treks.
“My life has been enriched by the experiences of solving problems in an unfamiliar place and among unforgettable people,” she said.
The season will conclude with a trip to Tuscany in May 2023. The 10-day excursion, hosted by President Susanna Baxter and First Gentleman Mark Huffman, will include tours in the cities of Arezzo, Cortona and Florence, the capital of Tuscany.
“3D Journeys is a wonderful program, as it provides an opportunity to engage our alumni and friends in learning about the history and culture of a place through lectures and travel,” Dr. Baxter said. “It’s perfect for people who want to explore international destinations and enjoy traveling with a group but don’t want the hassle of planning the trip.”
Buchanan said Italy will be the group’s first excursion outside of the U.S. since the pandemic put a hold on international travel last year.
“I think we’ve all missed the opportunity to travel and experience the culture, history, and natural environment of another country,” she said. “These trips allow the group to expand their horizons outside of the U.S. and learn about the customs and traditions of different countries.”
Buchanan said Hart Travel Partners’ Steve Hart, who plans the itineraries every season, creates experiences that are unique and special for the 3D Journeys group.
“Every trip has been memorable, and the opportunity to travel with old friends while making new ones makes the trip even better.”
Details and rates for the spring 2023 trip, will be available Monday, October 24. Registration for the optional travel to Tuscany, begins October 27.
